Tales we wove in travel
tempting fate with late-March
journey: dream-like gem of
giants’ making, taking–
Sky-road, mist-blunt mountains,
murky, gray-hewn way by
age-fraught barrows brought us
brave to poet’s graveside
My attempt at a dróttkvætt for Yeah Write’s April poetry slam.
Love this! I don’t know if it’s a whatever you said, but it’s a lovely poem.

Thanks so much! I’m glad I stuck with it–the form rules take some concentration. 🙂

Someone else’s poem for a change. A small gem.

“Mist-blunt mountains.” I am in love with that description! And “dream-like gem of giants’ making, taking.” What a perfect form to describe such a pilgrimage!

It was like a tough workout–many times I wanted to quit, but in the end I was glad I stuck with it.

Ooh, this was nice. I really liked “mist-blunt mountains” as well, and the whole poem. Having done a drottkvaett myself, I can appreciate the work that goes into it. This was brilliant.

You are too kind. I confess, I kept looking at yours while I struggled on this to see if I was even in the ballpark. Yours was awesome, and I was so jealous of how naturally heroic it sounded. 🙂

I just read the guidance on the form and it looked so difficult! I really enjoyed this, it reminded me of my trips to Ireland, you really brought home what you were describing while still keeping within the form. I liked the tempting fate with late March journey.

Thanks so much, I’m glad the “Ireland-ness” of it came through for you. Our tempting fate resulted in rain rain rain, but still a wonderful trip. 🙂
As far as the form, Rowan’s comment after the post, in which she gave a checklist for rhyme/alliteration, helped me the most.

I love your reference to the Giant’s Causeway, brought me right back to my time there.

Glad that worked for you. I felt the form was forcing me to be quite allusive. 🙂
