The devil had me by the throat
that summer—no not by the throat
but yes by the throat or why
could I not sing
or sleep for thinking
he had me by the wrists
these idle hands
Why should you gain the whole world
and forfeit your song? Contentment
elusive as that hummingbird
just there in your stillness
and gone
I’ve known that restlessness…(K)

Thank you. I wanted to put a “fists” rhyme in there, but stopped myself. 😉

Wonderful poem–one I need to read over many times.
I liked the idle hands–it goes with the devil. 🙂
I also liked: “Contentment
elusive as that hummingbird
just there in your stillness
and gone”

Thank you. Yes, those idle hands and the devil…funny how those old sayings get so ground into one’s mind.

Indeed, why? This is wonderful, and really speaks to my own demons. A good poem to keep close to the heart.

Brilliant! There are hidden and unexpected rhymes in here and a restlessness that feels intensely familiar.

Summer is a terrible season for restlessness, for me. Thank you for reading. I have been taking a mini-break, working on the Book Idea.

Book Idea! It’s not really a break in that case 🙂
