The security line is long—you look fragile
in your black coat, a little pale, resolute
to not cry though we find we might
miss each other after all
At home, you’ve left the usual disaster
so your room is only a bit less jumbled
than yesterday—the cat, clueless
sleeps in the center of your bed
I really like this one.

I like this one as well. It captures a great deal of parting emotion in just a few words.

I appreciate that, especially as I cut down drastically from the first drafts.

Awww. I love this and the title is perfect. Is this a kid leaving for college?

Thank you, and yes, my oldest just went back to Germany to study. 😦 🙂

I know the feeling. The clueless cat is perfect. A wondering dog is what happens here.

Just the right sense of anguish and the homely image of the cat—the stable point in a world of flux 🙂

They do seem to have the right attitude–take life as it comes, and when all else fails, take a nap.

Yeah. And then you get home. I have made a religious rite out of cleaning the boys’ rooms after they head back to school. But I need to wait at least two weeks to face it. 😦
