Vow of Silence

A tossing red-gold day

with only two places to look—

crisp leaves underfoot

or cloud-gentled bright sky—

so the neighbor’s greeting startles.

You don’t know her, have never

talked but she has a baby

so you smile and also

say hallo. You move on,

each of you contained

in aloneness but wanting

other life confirmed.
