Erste und immer: whining.
Cogs on the tourist trail tracking
up Schlangenweg’s steep cobbles—
90 degrees, sun, blackberried
dry-wall view over the Neckar
to the Schloss, medieval-gated
university town.
Parents these many years; ergo,
we take it with a grain of philosophy.
Today we drove to Heidelberg to hike the famous Philosophenweg (Philosopher’s Walk) via the Schlangenweg (Serpentine Walk). erste =first, immer = always, Schloss = castle
Das ist schön.

First and foremost whining? Yup. Whenever my little one doesn’t whine, I have to ask if everything is ok? Thanks for bringing back good memories for me of being in Germany. 🙂

Ha, that’s a positive way to look at it…if they’re whining, at least they’re still breathing. 😉

I can picture it, being back in Germany, how you’ve seamlessly intertwined two languages– it’s quite brilliant. Love this!

Thank you! I did have fun with this…and I’ve been wanting to throw in some of my very small stock of German for a while. 🙂

I appreciate that, Jen. ‘Cause German probably isn’t the first language I think of when I think, “poetry.” 😉

We started taking video of the whiniest kid and it made him so mad knowing his whining was being preserved for posterity that he quit doing it!! We also now have a treasure trove of videos to choose from for his wedding 😉 Win/win.

We were in the Highlands at the end of April. So beautiful. My favorite place for castles, so far, is Wales. All the crumbly ones…those are my favorite. 🙂

Thanks, Nate. I do hope that one day my kids will remember (sans whining) the cool places we got to visit.

Thanks, Meg. It’s probably unfair of me to whine about my kids’ whining. There is always joy in the balance. 🙂
